Both vaping nicotine and using nicotine pouches, like the popular brand Zyn, are marketed as potentially healthy alternatives to typical tobacco products. Unlike vaping which involves inhaling vaporized liquid into lungs, nicotine pouches are placed between the lip and gum, enabling nicotine to be absorbed into the bloodstream through mouth tissue. Yet both are still providing nicotine, a highly addictive substance, that is especially problematic when used by younger individuals.

Similar to vape products, which can contain varying levels of nicotine, Zyn is also available in different strengths. Higher nicotine concentrations and frequency generally create and sustain addiction. Some side effects associated with Zyn include gum irritation, sore mouth, and nausea. Any long-term harm remains unknown. Fortunately, use of nicotine pouches among youth is low at 1.5%, according to the latest National Youth Tobacco Survey conducted in 2023.
